Well, we all knew that Trump would do a few stupid things on his two week Asia trip. However, even for a man like Trump, what he said in front of all of Japan just created a new definition for stupid. In a shocking display of a lack of understanding for the impact of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, Trump bragged about America destroying its enemies. Here’s what he said in front of an audience of U.S. service members stationed in Japan:
No dictator, no regime, and no nation should underestimate ever, American resolve. Every once and a while in the past, they underestimated us. It was not pleasant for them, was it?

Here’s how New York Times reporter Hiroko Tabuchi observed the translation of the comments that were all over Japanese television:
‘Those who underestimated us in the past didn’t meet a good end.’
Unfortunately, the Japanese subtitles make him sound particularly tone deaf “Those who underestimated us in the past didn’t meet a good end” pic.twitter.com/YdPEV174dm

We already know that Trump is incompetent but what he just said proves that no one around him is either. At least have someone check his insane speeches.
The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians and the scars of the only nuclear attack in history continue to this day. Japan, which was a foe during World War II, is a staunch American ally today. For the millions of Japanese who heard Trump’s speech, his words only contribute to the scars of the nuclear attack. It’s quite despicable.
